Description
A constable posted with the Mandawali police station in east Delhi was suspended and sent to the police lines after a woman accused him of harassment on Friday evening.
Police said the woman, a resident of Sangam Vihar in southeast Delhi, was visiting relatives in Mandawali. In the evening the couple went out to get ice cream in a group. "The woman's husband in his complaint stated that constable Mukesh first passed lewd comments, and when the victim protested, he harassed her,'' said Ajay Kumar, DCP (east).
However, the constable said he was only trying to do his duty and had asked the woman's husband to remove his car from a no-parking zone. Police did not confirm whether the accused had grasped the woman's hand when she lodged her first protest.
Some witnesses have alleged that he was drunk. "If our probe finds the constable guilty, he will be duly punished,'' said an officer.
There have been cases in the past when police have been accused of misconduct. Most recently, a crime branch official was arrested for looting a hawala dealer of Rs 3 crore. "The police feels that their uniform will silence everybody and so they can get away with anything,'' said a retired DCP level officer.
